NASA Scientist Discovers Significant New Crater on Moon

A NASA scientist has identified what appears to be the largest newly formed crater on the Moon, resulting from an impact by an asteroid approximately the size of a six-story building. The crater, measuring 728 feet (about 222 meters) in diameter, was created when the asteroid struck the lunar surface. This event is described as a “once-in-a-century” occurrence due to such large impacts being rare.

NASAs lunar orbiter, part of ongoing exploration efforts to understand the Moons geological activity, captured images of the new crater, highlighting the impacts significance in studying the Moons surface. The collision sent debris, including rocks, flinging as far as 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) from the point of impact.

This discovery emphasizes the dynamic nature of the Moon and the continued risks posed by asteroids and other celestial debris to not only the Moon but potentially to Earth as well.
