NCAA Womens Tournament to Seed Top 16 Teams Based on True Rankings Next Year

Starting in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, the selection committee will implement a new seeding strategy. The top 16 teams will be positioned in the tournament bracket according to their true rankings, irrespective of their conference affiliations.

This change is aimed at enhancing the fairness and competitiveness of the tournament, allowing the best teams to be recognized based on their performance throughout the season. Previously, the seeding process was influenced by conference standings, which sometimes led to uneven matchups.

The adjustment comes as part of ongoing efforts by the NCAA to improve womens basketball visibility and competitiveness. The new system is expected to provide a more accurate reflection of the teams abilities and competitive strength, potentially leading to more exciting matchups and outcomes. The committees decision follows extensive feedback from coaches, players, and stakeholders within womens college basketball.
