NCERT to Reinstate Original Dancing Girl Image in Textbooks Following Feedback
The latest NCERT arts textbook for Class 9 has sparked discussion due to its edited representation of the iconic bronze figurine known as the “Dancing Girl” from the ancient Indus Valley civilization site of Mohenjo-daro. In this new edition, the famous artifact, which is renowned for its detailed craftsmanship and cultural significance, has had its bare torso digitally covered, differing from its original depiction in a Class 6 textbook where the figure is illustrated in a manner consistent with the original sculpture.
The “Dancing Girl,” dating back to around 2500 BCE, is one of the most acclaimed pieces of art from the Indus Valley, showcasing the artistic talent of the time and providing insights into the culture and lifestyle of the civilization. The decision to alter the image in the current textbook raises questions regarding the representation of historical artifacts and how they are presented in educational materials.
This change reflects broader discussions within educational circles about contextual sensitivity and the portrayal of historical figures and artifacts in a manner that is inclusive and respectful. It remains important for educational institutions to balance the preservation of cultural heritage with contemporary values and societal norms.
