NMC Increases MBBS Seats by 9,911 for 2026-27, Bringing Total Intake to 136,939

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced the approved MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic admissions, revealing a total of 136,939 seats available across 823 medical colleges in India. This represents an increase of 9,911 seats compared to previous years, with new institutions contributing 2,400 additional seats to this total.

Among the states, Karnataka has emerged as the leader in terms of the highest number of approved MBBS seats. Notably, private medical colleges have been found to offer a greater overall number of seats compared to their public counterparts.

In an effort to regulate the expansion of new medical colleges, the NMC has stipulated that private institutions must submit bank guarantees within seven days of receiving approval for these additional seats. The NMC’s initiative aims to address the growing demand for medical education and ensure sufficient training opportunities for prospective medical students in the country.
