Official: Government anticipates stable supply of edible oil

C. Shikha, the Joint Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution, addressed reporters recently regarding Indias sourcing of edible oil imports. She indicated that a significant portion of these imports has been secured via trade routes that remain largely unaffected by recent global disruptions, notably the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca.

India, which is one of the largest importers of edible oils worldwide, relies heavily on countries like Indonesia and Malaysia for palm oil, as well as other sources for soy and sunflower oils. The government is actively monitoring market conditions and is committed to ensuring that the supply chain for edible oils remains stable to meet domestic demand. As of late 2023, the country has also been exploring alternatives and enhancing domestic production to mitigate the impact of global supply chain challenges and price fluctuations.
