Omar Abdullah Requests Support from INDIA Bloc for Restoration of J&K Statehood

Sheikh Khursheed, leader of the Awami Ittehad Party and a sitting legislator, stated that if Mr. Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party, are able to convince the INDIA coalition to release a joint statement advocating for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmirs special constitutional status, statehood, and additional political rights, it would represent a pivotal advancement.

The Jammu and Kashmir region, which has experienced significant political and social upheaval in recent years, lost its special status in August 2019, when the Indian government revoked Article 370 of the Constitution. This move led to heightened tensions and concerns regarding the rights of the local population. The ongoing discourse among political factions emphasizes the desire for restoration of autonomy and political representation for the region, which is home to a diverse demographic and has long been a focal point of political contestation in India.
