Orange Alert Issued for Six Districts in Kerala Due to Southwest Monsoon

The southwest monsoon has officially commenced over Kerala, arriving three days later than the expected onset date of June 1. This annual weather phenomenon, which typically brings significant rainfall to the region, marks a critical period for agriculture and water resource management in Kerala.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecasted the delay due to various atmospheric conditions, including changes in the temperature and pressure systems over the Indian Ocean. The southwest monsoon is crucial for Kerala, where approximately 60% of the annual rainfall occurs during this season, significantly influencing the states agricultural practices.

As the monsoon progresses, farmers in Kerala eagerly anticipate the rains to support the cultivation of rice, spices, and other crops that thrive under these conditions. Authorities are also preparing to monitor rainfall levels closely to manage water supplies and mitigate potential flooding, which can arise from the heavy downpours associated with the monsoon season.
