Pakistan Deputy PM Affirms Validity and Binding Nature of Indus Waters Treaty

In a recent statement, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that any efforts to deny Pakistan its allocated water resources could lead to significant repercussions for regional peace and security. Dars comments come amid ongoing discussions about water sharing agreements in the region, particularly concerning the Indus River System, which is vital for the agricultural economy of Pakistan.

The Minister underscored the importance of adhering to international treaties, such as the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water distribution between Pakistan and India. He reiterated Pakistan’s position on its water rights, stressing that any disruption in water flow could exacerbate tensions in an already delicate geopolitical landscape.

Dar’s remarks highlight the critical nature of water resources in South Asia, particularly as the impacts of climate change and population growth place increasing stress on water availability. Both Pakistan and India have significant stakes in the sustainable management of these resources, and Dars warning serves as a call to prioritize cooperation and dialogue over conflict in addressing water-sharing issues.
