Parliament Special Session: Bill for Womens Reservation and Delimitation to be Introduced in Lok Sabha Today
The government has announced a three-day special session starting April 16, aimed at amending the Constitution to facilitate the implementation of the women’s reservation law in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This initiative follows the completion of a delimitation exercise, which involves redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies to reflect population changes and ensure equitable representation.
The women’s reservation law, which seeks to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women, was passed by Parliament in 2019 but requires constitutional amendments for full enforcement. The planned special session reflects the governments commitment to enhancing womens political representation in India.
The delimitation process is expected to ensure that the allocation of reserved seats is based on the most recent demographic data, which could lead to adjustments in constituency boundaries. This session will thus be critical not only for advancing gender equality in politics but also for addressing the changing political landscape ahead of the 2029 elections.
