PM Modi Visits Historic Dutch Dam to Discuss Water Management Collaboration

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has recognized the Afsluitdijk Dam as a “symbol of excellence and innovation,” emphasizing its significant contributions to water management, flood protection, and freshwater storage.

The Afsluitdijk, located in the Netherlands, is a major dam and causeway that spans approximately 32 kilometers and separates the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. Completed in 1933, it was designed to protect low-lying areas from flooding and has played a crucial role in land reclamation, transforming parts of the region into arable land.

In addition to its protective functions, the dam serves as a vital infrastructure component, facilitating transportation and energy generation through the integration of wind turbines. As climate change increasingly impacts global weather patterns, the Afsluitdijk stands as a benchmark for innovative engineering solutions in managing water resources and mitigating flood risks.

The MEAs recognition highlights the importance of learning from international projects like the Afsluitdijk as countries continue to confront challenges related to rising sea levels and extreme weather events.
