Private Schools in Karnataka Raise Fees Amid Lack of Official RTE Quota Directive for Class 9 and 10 SC/ST Students

In the recently unveiled 2026-27 budget, the state government has introduced a significant initiative to provide free education for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) students in classes 9 and 10 within the existing framework of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. This policy aims to enhance educational access and support for marginalized communities.

The RTE Act, enacted in 2009, mandates free and compulsory education for all children aged 6 to 14 years. With this new provision extending coverage to students in higher classes, the state government is taking a proactive step towards promoting educational equity.

The initiative is expected to benefit numerous students from SC/ST backgrounds who face financial challenges, allowing them to continue their education without the burden of tuition fees. This move aligns with the governments broader efforts to improve educational outcomes and social inclusion for disadvantaged groups. Additional support measures, such as scholarship programs and mentorship opportunities, may be considered to further bolster this initiatives impact.
