Radio-tagged white-rumped vulture located near Mudumalai Tiger Reserve
In an interview with The Hindu, R. Vidhyadhar, Deputy Director of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) Buffer Zone, provided insights into the recent observations of a bird that has been seen exploring various habitats in the area, such as Gudalur, over the past few weeks. He noted that the bird has not been observed foraging on carcasses alongside other vultures, which may indicate atypical behavior for the species.
The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is known for its rich biodiversity, serving as a critical habitat for numerous species, including various types of vultures. The observation of this birds movements raises questions about its health and feeding habits, especially given the ecological importance of vultures in carcass decomposition and nutrient cycling. Wildlife officials and conservationists may monitor the situation closely to contribute to understanding avian behavior in changing environments.
