Radio Telemetry Provides Insights into Vulture Rescue Efforts

A White-rumped vulture, identified as Z25 and monitored via a radio-tagging program, has been a focal point of conservation efforts by scientists and local NGOs at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The conservation team utilized critical data from the tracking device to alert forest personnel about the birds movements, enabling timely interventions to protect Z25 on several occasions. However, despite these efforts, Z25 tragically collided with a power transmission line before a life-saving measure could be executed based on the received data.

White-rumped vultures, classified as critically endangered, play an essential role in the ecosystem by helping to control waste and disease.
