Report: Women Comprise 10.2% of Candidates in 20 Assembly Elections Following Passage of Womens Bill in 2023

In preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, an analysis conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed that among 8,360 candidates assessed, only 800, or 9.6%, are women. Additionally, it was found that 152 out of 543 constituencies—approximately 28%—feature no women candidates at all.

This data highlights ongoing gender disparities in political representation in India. Despite various initiatives aimed at encouraging womens participation in politics, the underrepresentation remains a significant concern. The findings also invite dialogue on potential policy measures that could enhance the inclusion of women in the electoral process.

The Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indias Parliament, plays a crucial role in shaping the nation’s legislation and governance. Increased participation of women in such a legislative body could bring diverse perspectives, promoting more comprehensive and inclusive policymaking. The elections are set to take place in the first half of 2024, with discussions on gender representation likely to be a prominent aspect of the electoral discourse.
