Russia Becomes Major Supplier of Crude Oil Imports to India

According to an analysis conducted by the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), India imported approximately $14.8 billion worth of crude oil in June 2023 from various sources. Notably, $7.2 billion of this total was attributed to imports from Russia, representing a significant 48.6% share of India’s overall crude oil imports for that month.

This increase in Russian oil imports is significant, particularly in the context of the ongoing geopolitical landscape and sanctions placed on Russia by several Western countries following the invasion of Ukraine. India has maintained a strategic approach to its energy imports, seeking to diversify its sources while balancing economic considerations.

These figures illustrate Indias increasing reliance on Russian oil amidst fluctuating global energy prices and its broader strategy to secure energy resources to meet domestic demand. The ongoing developments in the global oil market and geopolitical tensions are likely to continue influencing Indias import patterns in the future.
