Russian Oil Tanker En Route to China Redirected to India
The oil tanker Aqua Titan, which is reportedly transporting 7.7 lakh barrels of crude oil, has altered its course in Southeast Asia and is now navigating towards Mangalore Port in India. Maritime analysts have indicated that the vessel may be affiliated with what is informally known as the “dark fleet,” a term that generally refers to ships engaged in transporting oil in a manner that circumvents international sanctions, primarily associated with Russia.
The “dark fleet” has gained attention in recent years as it includes vessels that often change ownership, names, and flags to obscure their connections, particularly in the context of sanctions imposed on Russian entities due to geopolitical tensions. This change in the Aqua Titans route may signify increasing activity in the transport of oil amid the ongoing demand for crude in various markets.
Mangalore Port, located on the southwestern coast of India, is a significant hub for oil imports, and its infrastructure supports the handling of large quantities of crude oil. The situation reflects the broader dynamics in the global oil market, particularly concerning countries facing export restrictions and the growing reliance on alternative supply routes.
