Saitual District Achieves Surakshit HIV Status, First in Mizoram

Saitual has become the first district in the Indian state of Mizoram to be designated as Surakshit or safe concerning HIV. This significant accomplishment reflects the efforts of local health authorities and the community in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS through awareness programs, testing, and treatment initiatives.

The Surakshit status is part of the National AIDS Control Organizations (NACO) criteria, which includes the following benchmarks: ensuring that more than 95% of people living with HIV are aware of their status, at least 95% of those diagnosed are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and achieving viral suppression among at least 95% of those on treatment.

Mizoram has been proactive in its approach to HIV prevention and treatment. The state has implemented various programs focusing on education, access to healthcare, and reducing stigma surrounding the disease. Health officials in Saitual have attributed this achievement to collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, community organizations, and government agencies.

This milestone serves as a model for other districts in the region, highlighting the importance of public health strategies in tackling HIV/AIDS and promoting overall community health. The state aims to continue its efforts to eliminate HIV transmission and support those affected by the virus, reinforcing its commitment to public health and wellness.
