“Satluj Director Reveals Diljit Was Aware of OTT Removal Before Announcement”
Honey Trehan has disclosed the strategic decision behind the unexpected release of “Satluj” on the streaming platform ZEE5, which was made without the typical scrutiny of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that has delayed the film for four years. Only lead actor Diljit Dosanjh was privy to the plan prior to the release.
After releasing uncut, the film was removed from the platform just 105 minutes later and has since been taken down “until further notice.” Trehan attributes the films swift pivot to a digital release to the ongoing collaborative relationship between RSVP and ZEE, highlighting Ronnie Screwvala’s pivotal role in this decision.
The “Satluj” release raises questions regarding the challenges faced by filmmakers in navigating certification processes in India, where there have been ongoing discussions about censorship and creative freedom. The decision to release directly on a streaming platform reflects a growing trend in the film industry where digital distribution offers a more flexible alternative to traditional theatrical releases, particularly in light of regulatory hurdles. Further details regarding the reasons for the films abrupt withdrawal from ZEE5 have yet to be disclosed.
