Seven Years After August 5: Continued Delay in J&K Statehood Raises Concerns Over Trust

### Seven Years After Article 370 Abrogation: Calls for J&K Statehood Reinstatement

As the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 approaches, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), there is a renewed emphasis on the need for the restoration of statehood to the region. Various political leaders and former officials, including ex-Home Secretary Gopal Pillai and former interlocutor Radha Kumar, have articulated their concerns regarding the prolonged delay in reinstating J&Ks statehood.

They argue that further postponement could undermine public trust in the governments commitment to addressing the aspirations of the local population. Following the historic decision made on August 5, 2019, which was intended to integrate J&K more closely with the Indian Union, the region has experienced significant political and social changes.

In response to ongoing debates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the transformations witnessed in J&K and Ladakh since the repeal of Articles 370 and 35(A). He asserted that these legislative changes have opened a new chapter in the region’s development and governance.

In light of these developments, political parties across the spectrum are advocating for a more inclusive dialogue about J&Ks future, with many emphasizing the importance of returning to normalcy and empowering local governance structures. Various civil society groups and activists also continue to call for the repeal of the Reorganization Act, urging that it be replaced with measures more attuned to the needs and grievances of the local populace.

As discussions surrounding J&Ks future unfold, the region remains at a pivotal juncture, grappling with the impacts of policy decisions made over the past few years and the aspirations of its residents for greater autonomy and statehood.
