Social Justice Ministry Meeting Focuses on Counting DNT Population

Denotified, nomadic, and semi-nomadic tribes in India are mobilizing to advocate for the inclusion of a dedicated column in Census forms to accurately reflect their populations. These groups, historically marginalized and often overlooked in demographic surveys, aim to ensure that their unique identities and needs are recognized in national statistics.

The demand for a separate category arises from the challenges these communities face, including issues related to social welfare, access to services, and representation in policy-making. By having a distinct classification, representatives of these tribes believe they can better address their concerns and secure resources that align with their specific cultural and economic practices.

The Census, conducted every ten years, is a crucial tool for government planning and resource allocation. In the past, many members of these tribes have reported discrepancies or have been categorized under broader classifications, which may not capture the nuances of their lifestyles and social structures.

Advocates argue that accurate representation in the Census could enhance visibility for these communities and lead to targeted initiatives aimed at improving their living conditions, education, health care, and employment opportunities. As the next Census approaches, these tribes are increasing their efforts to raise awareness and gain support for their cause.
