Southwest Monsoon 2026 Begins in Kerala, According to IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts in Kerala due to heavy rainfall impacting the region. The alert is a warning of potential severe weather, emphasizing the possibility of heavy downpours that could lead to localized flooding, landslides, and disruption of daily activities.
The affected districts include Ernakulam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Thiruvananthapuram. Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.
The IMD forecasts that the heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next few days, driven by the southwest monsoon, which is active in the state. Historically, Kerala experiences significant rainfall during this season, with the potential for both beneficial effects, such as replenishing water supplies, and adverse impacts, particularly in low-lying and coastal areas.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay updated with weather reports and heed safety instructions to minimize risks associated with severe weather. Emergency services and local administrations are on standby to respond to any incidents related to the heavy rains.
