Southwest Monsoon Expected to Arrive in Kerala on May 26, According to IMD

The Kerala region traditionally experiences the onset of the southwest monsoon around June 1 each year. This event marks the beginning of the monsoon season in India, which subsequently progresses northward across the country. The monsoon is crucial for agriculture in India, as it provides the majority of the annual rainfall essential for crop irrigation.

In recent years, the timing and intensity of the monsoon have shown variability, prompting discussions on climate changes impact on weather patterns. On average, the southwest monsoon contributes to around 75% of the total annual rainfall in India, with Kerala receiving about 2,000 to 4,000 millimeters of rain during the monsoon months, significantly impacting the states agricultural output and water resources. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) closely monitors and forecasts the monsoon, providing vital data to farmers and stakeholders across the country ahead of the rainy season.
