Tamil Nadu Increases Auto Fares, Minimum Base Fare Raised to Rs 50

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an increase in auto rickshaw fares, with the minimum base fare now set at Rs 50, effectively doubling the previous rate. This decision comes as part of a broader effort to address rising operational costs faced by auto drivers in the state.

The new fare structure, which was approved by the state’s transport department, will see the minimum fare for auto rickshaws rise from Rs 25 to Rs 50. Additionally, the fare for every kilometer traveled will also see an increase, reflecting the growing expenses related to fuel and maintenance that drivers have been experiencing.

Transport Minister S. S. Sivasankar stated that the fare hike was necessary to ensure that auto drivers can sustain their livelihoods amid increasing costs. He emphasized that the government is committed to balancing the needs of both passengers and drivers, aiming to provide fair compensation for the services rendered by auto rickshaw operators.

The fare revision has sparked mixed reactions among the public. While some passengers express concern over the increased costs, many auto drivers welcome the change, viewing it as a long-overdue adjustment that recognizes their financial struggles. The government has assured that the new rates will be closely monitored to ensure compliance and fairness in the industry.

In addition to the fare increase, the government is also considering implementing measures to improve the overall quality of auto services, including better regulation of drivers and vehicles. This initiative aims to enhance passenger safety and satisfaction while ensuring that drivers are adequately compensated for their work.

The fare hike is expected to take effect shortly, and the government has urged both drivers and passengers to adapt to the new rates. As the transportation landscape continues to evolve, officials remain focused on finding solutions that benefit all stakeholders involved in the auto rickshaw sector.
