Tamil Nadus GST Growth at 3% in October Falls Behind Kerala and Andhra Pradesh
In October, Tamil Nadu experienced a modest growth of 3% in its Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections, which is notably lower than the growth rates observed in neighboring states such as Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. This performance has drawn attention from state officials, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who have expressed concerns regarding the states economic trajectory.
The GST collections in Tamil Nadu amounted to ₹12,000 crore for the month, reflecting a slower pace of growth compared to the previous year. In contrast, Kerala reported a growth rate of 10%, while Andhra Pradesh achieved an impressive 15% increase in their GST collections. This disparity has raised questions about the factors contributing to Tamil Nadus underperformance in comparison to its counterparts.
In response to these figures, Chief Minister Stalin emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the states tax policies and revenue-generating strategies. He highlighted the importance of enhancing the efficiency of tax collection mechanisms and addressing any potential leakages in the system. The Chief Minister also called for a collaborative effort among various departments to boost economic activity and improve the overall fiscal health of the state.
Finance Minister Thennarasu echoed these sentiments, urging for a focused approach to stimulate growth in the GST sector. He pointed out that the state must leverage its strengths, such as its industrial base and service sector, to enhance revenue generation. The minister also mentioned the necessity of engaging with stakeholders to identify challenges and implement effective solutions.
The Tamil Nadu government is now looking into various initiatives to revitalize its economic performance, including promoting investments and improving infrastructure. The state aims to create a more conducive environment for businesses, which could potentially lead to increased tax revenues in the future.
As the government navigates these challenges, the focus remains on fostering sustainable economic growth while ensuring that the states fiscal policies align with the broader objectives of development and prosperity. The upcoming months will be critical for Tamil Nadu as it seeks to enhance its GST performance and catch up with the growth trajectories of its neighboring states.
