Tamil Nadu to Implement Intellectual Property Rights Policy Emphasizing Geographical Indication Products
In the financial year 2025-26, a total of 43 applications for Geographical Indication (GI) registrations were submitted by the state. Notably, 11 of these applications were filed by the Patent Information Centre as part of its initiatives under the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST).
Experts have highlighted the importance of linking GI products with the tourism sector to boost their visibility and marketability. Geographical Indications serve to protect products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation inherent to that location. By promoting these products in conjunction with tourism, stakeholders can enhance both cultural heritage and economic benefits for local communities.
Furthermore, integrating GI products into tourism strategies can provide visitors with unique local experiences and foster appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and agricultural practices. This alignment may also support sustainable tourism initiatives, providing economic incentives while preserving local identities and resources.
