Thekkady Lake Water Levels Decline Impacting Tourism Sector

The Kerala Forest Department, in collaboration with the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, has announced a reduction in seating capacity for boating services in Thekkady. This change is expected to result in a scarcity of tickets for tourists, who traditionally visit the region to engage in boating experiences and observe wildlife in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

The decision to decrease capacity is part of a broader effort to manage environmental concerns and ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife. The Periyar Lake, a primary attraction for boating activities, has experienced fluctuating water levels, prompting authorities to reassess the sustainability of current service levels.

In addition to the impact on tourism, local drinking water projects in the Kumily and Chakkupallom panchayats have also been affected by the declining water levels. These water supply issues may pose challenges for residents and could lead to increased demand for alternative water sources.

Officials are urging visitors to plan their trips accordingly and may explore alternative activities in the area that do not rely on boating. The region remains a popular destination for ecotourism, offering a variety of opportunities for wildlife observation and nature exploration.
