Thousands of Ageing BS3 Buses Continue Operation Across Karnataka
Thousands of aging BS-3 buses remain in operation throughout Karnataka, raising concerns regarding environmental standards and passenger safety. These buses, which do not comply with the latest emission regulations that mandate the transition to BS-4 or BS-6 standards, are still being utilized by various state-run transportation services.
The Karnataka government had previously implemented a plan to phase out older buses to promote cleaner air and adhere to environmental guidelines. However, logistical challenges, funding limitations, and a lack of adequate replacements have delayed the complete transition to newer, more eco-friendly models.
According to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), around 5,000 BS-3 buses are still operational, contributing to higher levels of air pollution. Environmental experts have highlighted the urgency of replacing these vehicles to mitigate public health risks and support the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation initiatives.
In response to ongoing concerns, the government has expressed intentions to expedite the procurement of new buses and retire the remaining BS-3 fleet. Advocacy groups continue to monitor the situation, urging quicker implementation of solutions that enhance both environmental and passenger safety in public transport across the state.
