Tobacco Consumption Rates Elevated in Central and Eastern States of India | Data Bytes – Data for India

A recent analysis has revealed that tobacco use is significantly more prevalent in the central and eastern regions of India compared to other parts of the country. The study highlights that states such as Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh exhibit notably high rates of tobacco consumption among their populations.

According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), over 28% of adults in these regions are regular tobacco users, which is considerably higher than the national average of around 20%. The increased use of smokeless tobacco products, in particular, has been noted as a key factor contributing to these statistics.

Public health experts are expressing concern about the long-term implications of such high tobacco usage, including an increased risk of cancer, respiratory diseases, and other health issues among the population. Efforts to promote tobacco cessation and awareness campaigns are crucial in addressing this public health challenge in these regions.

The Indian government has implemented various initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco consumption, including stricter regulations on tobacco advertising and increased taxation on tobacco products. However, local cultural practices and socioeconomic factors continue to influence tobacco use patterns, presenting additional challenges to public health initiatives aimed at curtailing this behavior.
