Trinamool Claims BJP Promoting Vegetarianism in Bengal
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek OBrien has criticized a recent decision to exclude eggs from the midday meal program, describing it as an attempt to deprive children of essential nutrition. The midday meal program, which aims to provide nutritious meals to schoolchildren across India, has been a key initiative in combating malnutrition and promoting education.
OBrien emphasized the importance of including eggs, which are a rich source of protein and other vital nutrients, especially for children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. He argued that removing eggs from the menu could have detrimental effects on childrens health and development.
The midday meal scheme, initiated in the early 2000s, serves millions of children in public schools. It has been a subject of political debate, particularly regarding its nutritional content and the types of food provided. Various states have adopted different approaches to meal options, leading to discussions on best practices for ensuring that children receive adequate nutrition during their formative years.
