UPI Transactions to Continue Being Free for Consumers and Small Merchants, PCI Confirms
The Payment and Settlement Systems Act of India continues to ensure that Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions remain free for consumers, with additional measures for small merchants. The Payments Council of India (PCI) has clarified that while consumers will not incur fees on UPI transactions, the vast majority of transactions for small merchants will also remain free.
In light of recent government discussions regarding potential changes to transaction fees, it was emphasized that although a nominal Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) may be introduced for specific merchant payments, this fee structure will not apply to individual consumers utilizing the UPI system. This aligns with the Indian governments broader aim to bolster digital payments and encourage usage among consumers and smaller businesses alike.
The introduction of any MDR will be modest, as officials indicate that it is being considered for future implementations to balance the costs associated with maintaining the UPI infrastructure. This decision arises amid growing transaction volumes and the need for sustainable maintenance of digital payment systems in the country.
The UPI system has gained tremendous popularity in India since its launch, facilitating billions of transactions monthly, largely due to its convenience and zero transaction fee for users. Moving forward, stakeholders are encouraged to remain updated on any potential fee structures as the government navigates these changes carefully.
