US Lifts Sanctions on Iranian Crude: Reasons for Indian Refiners Continued Caution

Indian refiners are expected to maintain their distance from purchasing Iranian oil, even in light of a temporary waiver from the United States. The short duration of the waiver, combined with existing supply commitments and ongoing concerns about payment mechanisms, suggests that many Indian refiners have already established alternative sources for crude oil.

Despite the potential for opportunistic buying at reduced prices, industry analysts indicate that a substantial return to sourcing from Iran is unlikely in the near future. Additionally, China is anticipated to continue as the predominant buyer of Iranian crude, reinforcing its position in the global oil market.

Iranian oil exports have faced significant constraints since the reimposition of sanctions by the U.S. in 2018, and the recent short-term waiver has done little to change the long-term dynamics for Indian refiners. In the current energy landscape, where diversification and stable supply lines are prioritized, Indian oil companies are focusing on securing more reliable and long-term contracts from other oil-producing nations.
