Water Levels in Mumbai Seven Supply Lakes Reach 8 3 of Useful Capacity
Water levels in the major reservoirs supplying Mumbai have reached critically low levels, significantly lower than those recorded at the same time last year. As of October 2023, data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reveals that the combined storage in the citys seven key lakes is at approximately 40% of their total capacity, compared to around 70% during the previous year.
This decline in water levels raises concerns about the citys water supply, particularly in light of the ongoing urban demand and the dry weather conditions experienced this year. Water conservation measures are already being discussed by municipal authorities to address potential shortages. Residents and businesses are being encouraged to reduce water usage where possible.
Historically, this time of year would see higher water levels due to the monsoon season. However, this years below-average rainfall has contributed to the current situation. As Mumbais population continues to grow, the pressure on water resources has become increasingly pronounced, highlighting the need for sustainable water management practices.
