West Bengal Revises Bakrid Holidays: May 28 Designated as Sole Public Holiday

The West Bengal government has recently revised its holiday schedule for Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha. The government has officially announced that May 28, 2026, will now be the sole public holiday observed for the festival. This decision comes after updated information regarding moon sightings, which are essential for determining the official date of the holiday in the Islamic calendar.

As a result of this announcement, the previously designated holidays on May 26 and May 27 have been canceled. The change aims to ensure that the public holiday aligns with the actual observance of Eid al-Adha, which is an important religious event for the Muslim community.

Eid al-Adha marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, and is celebrated with prayers, feasting, and charitable acts. The West Bengal governments decision reflects its commitment to accurately observing major Islamic festivals in accordance with traditional practices. The administration is working closely with religious leaders to ensure that public holidays align with community needs.
