Women Pioneering Growth in Tourism Sector in Maravanthuruth, Kerala
A pioneering initiative has emerged in Kerala as women from the village of Maravanthuruth have established the regions first all-woman kayaking club, named Harithatheeram. This initiative operates under the states Responsible Tourism Mission and is spearheaded by 63-year-old N.G. Indira.
The primary objective of Harithatheeram is to enhance local tourism by providing kayaking experiences along the Arivalthodu canal, which is a key component of the larger Water Street project. This project aims to promote eco-friendly travel and recreational opportunities while empowering local communities, particularly women, in tourism-related activities.
The establishment of the club not only aims to attract tourists but also seeks to create economic opportunities for local women, fostering a sense of community and encouraging environmental stewardship. Harithatheeram joins a growing movement in Kerala to leverage the states natural beauty and rich cultural heritage for sustainable tourism development.
