Government Considers Social Security Initiatives for Gig Workers Amid Projected Growth to 25 Million by Years End
In a recent statement, Joint Secretary and Director General of Labour Welfare, Ashutosh Pednekar, emphasized the governments ongoing initiatives to enhance worker protections. He specifically noted that the implementation of the Code on Social Security, part of the new labour code, is currently underway.
The Code on Social Security aims to provide a comprehensive framework for the welfare and social security of workers across various sectors. It seeks to ensure benefits such as maternity leave, health insurance, and retirement pensions, extending coverage to informal sector workers who have traditionally been excluded from such protections.
As part of the operationalization process, the government is collaborating with various stakeholders, including labor unions and industry representatives, to facilitate a smooth transition to the new regulations. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving the overall working conditions and rights of workers in the country. Further updates on the timeline and specific provisions of the Code are expected as the implementation progresses.
