Government launches OFS to sell up to 6.5% stake at Rs 382 per share; non-retail issue opens on August 4.
The Government of India has initiated the process to sell up to a 6.5% stake in the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) through an offer for sale (OFS), with a fixed price of ₹382 per share. This non-retail issue is set to open on August 4, 2023, as part of the broader strategy to raise capital through disinvestment.
The share sale is expected to generate revenues exceeding ₹30,000 crore (approximately $3.65 billion), which will be used to contribute to the governments disinvestment target. This move comes in the context of Indias ongoing efforts to reduce its fiscal deficit and bolster the economy, especially in the wake of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
LIC, which is one of Indias largest life insurance companies, had its initial public offering (IPO) in May 2022 and has since been in the spotlight for its significant role in the Indian financial markets. The governments stake sale is aimed at increasing the liquidity of LIC shares in the market while furthering the governments goal of privatization and increasing efficiency in public enterprises.
As one of the most significant disinvestment initiatives in recent times, this share sale is critical in helping the government balance its budget while promoting private investment in the insurance sector. Investors, both institutional and retail, are anticipated to closely monitor this opportunity.
