Retail Traders Incur Rs 25,000 Crore in Transaction Costs on F&O Trading in FY26 Despite Significant Losses

### Retail Traders Face Significant Losses Amidst High Transaction Costs in FY26

A recent analysis from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) reveals that retail traders in the futures and options (F&O) segment incurred transaction costs of approximately ₹25,000 crore in the fiscal year 2025-26, despite experiencing substantial losses estimated at ₹91,685 crore. This alarming trend highlights the financial strain on retail investors engaging in derivatives trading.

This is the first decline in the number of derivatives traders in four years, as reported by a SEBI study, which points to a significant shift in the trading landscape. Many retail traders incurred losses with nearly 90% reporting negative outcomes, raising concerns about the overall viability of retail participation in the derivatives market.

The findings suggest that larger market participants may be profiting at the expense of retail traders, reinforcing the need for increased regulatory oversight and protective measures for smaller investors. In response to these findings, analysts and regulators are calling for enhanced transparency and better risk management practices to protect vulnerable traders in the F&O space.

The decline in participation comes at a time when potential regulatory changes in F&O trading are being discussed, which could further impact retail trading dynamics. The data emphasizes the need for retail investors to make informed decisions and consider the inherent risks associated with derivatives trading.

As the market evolves, it remains imperative for traders—especially the retail segment—to seek education and guidance on navigating the complex world of futures and options to mitigate losses and enhance their trading strategies.
