India Administers 8 Million HPV Vaccine Doses as Part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Drive

Since February 2023, India has successfully administered over 8 million doses of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as part of a national initiative aimed at preventing cervical cancer. This comprehensive vaccination campaign, targeting girls around 14 years of age, has effectively reached approximately two-thirds of the eligible population.

Significant progress has been observed in several states, with Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Mizoram achieving 100% vaccination coverage within their respective regions. Telangana has also reported crossing a 60% coverage milestone.

The HPV vaccine is crucial in reducing the risk of cervical cancer, which is one of the most common malignancies affecting women in India. The public health initiative aims not only to increase awareness about cervical cancer but also to encourage vaccination as a preventive measure.
