Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board Announces Statewide Implementation of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs)

The proposed Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) will focus on the utilization of industrial greenbelts and the establishment of micro-forests in urban areas, including Vijayawada, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, and Rajahmundry.

These initiatives aim to enhance biodiversity and improve urban ecosystems by integrating natural habitats within city landscapes. The implementation of micro-forests, characterized by densely planted trees and native flora, is intended to provide ecological benefits, such as improved air quality, enhanced urban cooling, and increased recreational spaces for residents. The conservation efforts will not only help mitigate urban heat effects but also contribute to carbon sequestration and support local wildlife.

This strategy aligns with broader environmental goals set by state and national policies to promote sustainability and resilience in urban planning. Furthermore, the initiative may foster community engagement by involving residents in conservation activities, thereby raising awareness about ecological preservation and the importance of green spaces in urban settings.
