Government to Soon Announce High-Level Panel on Banking for Viksit Bharat

The Indian government is poised to establish a high-level panel focused on “Banking for Viksit Bharat,” as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the banking system and financial inclusivity across the nation. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms to align banking services with the evolving needs of a developed India.

In conjunction with this initiative, the Department of Financial Services (DFS) has convened the Public Sector Banks (PSBs) Confluence 2026. The first day of discussions revolved around four prominent themes: Deposit Mobilization, Banking for Youth, Supporting the Investment Cycle, and establishing Global Capability Centres. These themes aim to provide a framework for addressing contemporary banking challenges and ensuring that financial institutions remain relevant and responsive to customer needs.

Minister Sitharaman has urged public sector banks to prepare for the next phase of bank reforms, highlighting the importance of attracting younger clients and accommodating their banking preferences. Strategies discussed include innovative financial products tailored for Generation Z and more aggressive deposit mobilization techniques.

The formation of the high-powered panel follows a broader government vision to strengthen the banking sector by making it more accessible and effective in supporting economic growth. The government has set ambitious goals for enhancing financial literacy and increasing the penetration of banking services in underserved areas.

The high-level panel aims to scrutinize current banking practices and propose actionable recommendations to propel the industry forward, aligning with the governments overarching aspirations of fostering a robust and developed economic framework.
