Government Increases Onion Procurement Price by 13%: Reasons Explained

The government has announced an increase in the procurement price of onions to Rs 2,125 per quintal, representing a 13% rise. This decision aims to enhance farmers earnings and facilitate the accumulation of buffer stocks. This marks the fifth adjustment in procurement prices during the current agricultural season, which has been characterized by slower-than-expected procurement rates.

Despite the amplification of the procurement price, domestic onion availability continues to be stable, supported by sufficient stock levels and consistent wholesale arrivals across markets. Although there has been some indication of speculative buying, overall consumer demand for onions remains subdued.

The revised procurement price is part of the governments broader strategy to ensure food security and stabilize the agricultural market, following ongoing fluctuations in market prices. Analysts suggest that this action may also serve to provide some relief to onion farmers, who have faced various challenges in the past year including adverse weather conditions and rising input costs.
