India Expands Faunal Database by 709 New Species and Flora by 353 Taxa in 2025

In a significant development for biodiversity documentation in India, Kerala has added 98 new species of animals to the country’s biological database, marking the highest contribution among the states. Notably, Arunachal Pradesh also emerged as a key contributor with 49 new species discoveries.

These findings were highlighted in a report compiled by researchers working with the Zoological Survey of India. The discoveries include various taxa, exemplifying the rich biodiversity present in these regions. Both states are known for their unique ecosystems—Kerala with its lush vegetation and diverse habitats, and Arunachal Pradesh, which is recognized for its high altitude and vast forest areas.

This recent surge in species identification underscores the importance of continued ecological research and conservation efforts in India, particularly in biodiversity hotspots. The inclusion of these new species is expected to aid in conservation strategies and help raise awareness about the need for preserving wildlife resources in these environmentally significant areas.
