India signals openness to treaty discussions with Canada, targets ₹4.65 lakh crore trade potential.

India Initiates Economic Collaboration with Canada Amidst Trade Ambitions

In a recent development, India has expressed its readiness to engage in treaty discussions with Canada, with a view to enhancing bilateral trade that could reach approximately ₹4.65 lakh crore (around $56 billion). This initiative highlights Indias strategy to strengthen economic ties with key international partners.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal are actively promoting India as an attractive destination for foreign investors, pitching the country’s growth potential and ongoing reforms at international forums. This strategic outreach aims to attract investment, particularly from Canadian pension funds, to participate in Indias asset monetization efforts.

Additionally, India and Canada recently held their inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue, aiming to facilitate greater cooperation and understanding in financial services and regulatory frameworks. Discussions during this dialogue emphasized fostering stronger economic collaboration between the two nations.

The Indian government is positioning the country as a global hub for production, innovation, and services, as described by FM Sitharaman. This initiative is part of Indias broader goal to integrate deeper into the global supply chain and attract foreign investments to support its economic growth ambitions.

This evolving relationship with Canada reflects India’s commitment to diversifying its trade partnerships and enhancing its global economic footprint, particularly in the context of post-pandemic recovery and growth.
