India Withdraws Proposal for Mandatory Aadhaar App on Smartphones Following Opposition

Indias Information Technology Ministry has reviewed a proposal concerning the mandatory pre-installation of the Aadhaar application on smartphones. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issued a statement to Reuters indicating that the ministry is not in favor of this requirement.

The Aadhaar App is used for various purposes, including identity verification and accessing government services. The UIDAI oversees Aadhaar, which is a biometric identification system aimed at streamlining the delivery of welfare benefits and services.

The decision not to enforce mandatory pre-installation comes amid ongoing discussions about privacy concerns and user choice in technology deployment. As India continues to digitize its services, the role of biometric data and its accessibility remains a pertinent issue among policymakers and citizens alike.
