India and the UK Collaborate to Address Challenges in Trade Pact Implementation

India and the United Kingdom are currently in discussions to address unresolved issues related to the implementation of their free trade agreement, which was formally signed in July 2022. As both nations work towards operationalizing this pact, several critical points remain contentious.

Among the key issues is the UKs steel safeguard measures, which are designed to protect domestic industries but may inadvertently restrict Indian steel exports. Additionally, the proposed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism by the UK has raised concerns in India, particularly as it could affect Indian exports valued at approximately $775 million. This mechanism is intended to impose tariffs on products based on their carbon emissions, which could pose challenges for Indian exporters who may not be compliant with the UK’s environmental standards.

Negotiations are ongoing as both countries strive to find solutions that will facilitate trade and strengthen economic ties. The free trade agreement is seen as a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations, with the aim of increasing trade volumes and fostering investment opportunities in various sectors, including technology, healthcare, and renewable energy.
