India explores alternatives for LNG imports as Cabinet approves Rs 23,731 crore GOBARdhan scheme for compressed biogas.

The Government of India has launched the GOBARdhan scheme, officially known as the Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan initiative, to promote the production of compressed biogas. This initiative is part of Indias broader efforts to enhance renewable energy production and manage waste effectively.

The GOBARdhan scheme is structured around six key pillars designed to ensure its success:

1. Assured Offtake: This component guarantees a market for the biogas produced, encouraging investment and stability in production.

2. Price Stability: This ensures consistent pricing for biogas, providing financial security for producers and fostering a reliable supply chain.

3. Capital Expenditure (Capex) Support: The scheme offers financial support to help establish and maintain biogas production facilities, lowering the entry barrier for potential producers.

4. Pipeline Infrastructure Development: Investment in infrastructure is vital for the transportation of biogas to consumers, enhancing accessibility and efficiency in distribution.

5. Credit Guarantee: This feature offers financial backing to investors, reducing the risks associated with funding bio-gas projects and thereby encouraging more investment in the sector.

6. Challenge Fund for Innovation: This fund is aimed at encouraging innovative approaches and technologies in biogas production, fostering advancements that could improve efficiency and sustainability.

In addition to addressing waste management and environmental concerns, the GOBARdhan scheme aligns with national goals regarding renewable energy and climate change mitigation. By facilitating the production and use of biogas, the initiative also aims to create job opportunities in rural areas and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
