Indias First Undersea Rail Tunnel Progresses
Excavation for India’s first undersea rail tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has officially begun. A large Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) commenced its operations on Saturday, tunneling under Thane Creek. This marks a significant milestone in the development of the approximately seven-kilometer undersea segment of the high-speed rail corridor.
The TBM employed in this project is one of the largest ever utilized for rail tunnel construction in India, showcasing advanced engineering technology. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed railway, once completed, is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities significantly, bringing it down to approximately two hours from the current travel time of around seven hours.
The entire project, which is being developed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), aims to facilitate faster and more efficient transportation in the region, promoting economic growth and connectivity. Once operational, the bullet train line is also projected to enhance travel convenience for daily commuters and boost tourism between the major metropolitan areas. The project is part of Indias broader strategy to develop high-speed rail capabilities across the country, with additional corridors planned in various regions.
