Indias PMI declines to 52.8 as factory growth slows, reaching five-year low

In August 2023, Indias manufacturing sector faced a notable slowdown, marking the most substantial decline in five years. This downturn was characterized by decreased production levels and a reduction in new orders, resulting in the lowest activity levels recorded since August 2021. Consequently, the sector witnessed a contraction in employment for the first time in two and a half years.

While there was a marginal increase in purchasing activity during this period, overall demand from international markets weakened, contributing to the challenging conditions faced by manufacturers. Although there were signs of a rise in business confidence, it remained below historical averages, indicating concerns within the sector regarding future growth prospects.

Industry experts suggest that a combination of factors, including global economic uncertainties and domestic challenges such as inflation and supply chain disruptions, may be contributing to this slowdown. The recent data highlights the need for policymakers to address these issues to support recovery and sustain growth within the manufacturing sector in India.
