Karnataka Government Challenges Kasturirangan Report on Western Ghats ESA

The Government of Karnataka has expressed strong opposition to the Kasturirangan Report, which recommends the designation of ecologically sensitive areas (ESA) in the Western Ghats. This report was prepared by the High-Level Working Group, led by noted environmentalist Madhav Gadgil, and focuses on the conservation of biodiversity in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the worlds eight “hottest hotspots” of biological diversity.

Karnataka officials are concerned about the potential socio-economic impact of the reports strict conservation guidelines on local communities, agriculture, and developmental activities. The region is home to numerous villages and farming communities that rely on its resources for their livelihoods. Critics of the report argue that imposing stringent restrictions could jeopardize the lives and economies of these communities.
