Kudumbashree Womens Farmers Achieve Strong Returns with Watermelon Cultivation

Women farmers associated with Kudumbashree in Kerala have achieved an impressive turnover of ₹6.78 crore from watermelon cultivation across 758 acres in the current year, nearly doubling the earnings of the previous year. This growth is part of the Venal Madhuram initiative, which aims to empower women in agriculture and promote sustainable farming practices in the region.

The Venal Madhuram initiative supports women farmers by providing them access to necessary resources, training, and market opportunities, thereby enhancing their income and livelihood prospects. In addition to economic benefits, the initiative focuses on fostering community spirit and improving food security within the region. Over the past year, participants have also shared best practices and techniques, contributing to improved cultivation methods and higher yields.

The success seen this year highlights the potential of collective farming efforts and the significant contributions women can make to agricultural productivity and economic development. As the initiative continues to evolve, Kudumbashree aims to expand its reach, promoting the cultivation of various cash crops alongside watermelons in the future.
